South Pole - 2,200km on foot, so no fast cars!
Nobody's ever walked from the ice edge of Antarctica to the South Pole and back - so I'm going to do it; and, to make it even more interesting, and in the true spirit of the original polar explorers, I'm going to do it without support or re-supply.
So, in a nutshell, I'll be walking around 20 miles a day, every day, for nearly three months, towing behind me a sled weighing just short of 200kg, in temperatures averaging minus sixty degress and wind speeds of up to 200 mph.
For details of the challenge visit the website at www.lastgreatchallenge.com If anyone wants to get involved in any way, from training to, well, to whatever then drop me a line at justin-miles@hotmail.com . This adventure isn't just about me doing it, the more people I can get involved in whatever we do before I get to the ice edge the more I'll enjoy it!
Catch you soon!

There's nothing wrong with being a little "different" Dude!
Yep, we can have a chat about getting something sorted with FC, and any coverage would be very much appreciated.
I was wondering if there's any other publication in the Future group that may be interested in following/sponsoring us in any way?
You've got my email and number Chap, drop me a line.

Re: South Pole - 2,200km on foot, so no fast cars!
Ha ha! I'm doing it for lots of reasons Shaun.
Firstly, yep, I want to do it for the crack, and because I know I can. On 2nd March 1999 I was a PTI and personal trainer; by the end of the day on March 3rd 1999 my life was in tatters. I had a bit of a nasty smack in the car which left me unable to walk and talk as a result of the brain injuries that I sustained. As I fought back to fitness, I developed a "life plan" which culminated at the ten year point with me winding down whatever I was doing at the time, and pursueing a new life as an "adventurer". The ten years was up in March this year, so I put the wheels in motion. I've got the Marathon des Sables in March 2010, South Pole starting in November, North Pole the following year, and another atttempt on the summit of Everest somewhere in the middle. After that, who knows - maybe an ocean row or something.
Secondly, I'm doing it to help a few charities that are close to me, both well known household names, and lesser known local charities.
Thirdly, I'm doing it to add weight to my belief that we can all do magnificent things if we have belief, focus, and determination (self righteous Americanised rant over!).
It will make for a great conversation piece in the pub though... "What did you do last Christmas?". "I walked to the South Pole and back!"
Have fun
Just
PS. I'll get something over to you in the nest couple of days Glen - cheers

Re: South Pole - 2,200km on foot, so no fast cars!
Respect mate, keep us posted on how the training and everything is going I've been thinking about doing something of a similar nature in about two and a half years time when i finish my apprenticeship, as i cant really afford to take the time off at the moment. I was thinking about cycling from Castle Town in Scotland down to Lands End, which would possibly take afew years to plan anyways, down to setting up a Safe cycle route, camp sites, getting the backing from the charities, and training for the event itself. But im due to go on a lads holiday in 9 Days to Faliraki and when i get back i want to start kickboxing at the local gym which is only at the bottom of my street as im starting to feel the strain on my body of all the drinking, eating junk food and no exercise lifestyle as im getting chest pains quite regularly and cant run the length of my street without loosing my breath. But i want to do it in aid of the British Heart Foundation as i lost my dad to a heart attack when i was only 15 Also i would like to do it for a Military charity that helps support injured soldiers and help the families of soldiers that were killed. As in the long run i want to join the Army and would like to contribute a small amount towards the supportive charities as i dont think our troops get enough support and people really dont understand what they do for us. Which is evident when the top news stories are about Gordon Browns press conferences, football transfer fee's and MJ's death E.T.C and the soldiers get a little mention at the end of the news for around 2 minutes when they have laid there life down for this country,... One of the main reasons im waiting till i finish my apprenticeship is down to needing to buy quite afew things for the trip, New decent bike + small bike trailer (current bike would fall apart haha) would need to buy bike maintenance equipment (puncture repair kits, spare inner tubes, spare tyre's) then i would need a tent and other camping equipment..... There is alot of preperation needed so god knows what your prep list will be like haha Good luck with it all though mate

Re: South Pole - 2,200km on foot, so no fast cars!
Sounds like a plan Shaun. If there's anything I can do to pitch in and help drop me a line by email (in the first post on this thread). If you add me on Facebook you'll see a chap called Alastair Humphries. Al cycled 46,000 miles around the world a couple of years ago (took him 4 years!), and you may find his books a useful tool.
It doesn't matter how far away you go in your thirst for adventure. Some of the best adventures can be right on your doorstep. Look at it this way, how many of your friends have ever decided to cycle from one end of the UK to the other, then got off their arses and done it? My guess is none - so think about how great it's going to feel when you do it.
You can do anything you want to Chap - just believe in what you're doing, focus on the end result, and have the determination to succeed.
Now... GET ON WITH IT!!!
Good luck

I've added you on Facebook And the thing i think i will need most help with is the legal side of things, like do i need to inform the police? etc as i'll be able to contact charities and route plan no bother

Re: South Pole - 2,200km on foot, so no fast cars!
It certainly won't hurt to discuss it with the police. As well as the "courtesy" angle, they may be able to advise you as to safe routes etc. It's also worth talking with the AA about planing a route with you - they could get some publicity out of it, as could you.
Choose your charities carefully, and talk it through with them. It's in their interests to help you - the higher your profile, the more money they are likely to collect. Do bare in mind though that what mortals like us consider to be a fair amount to donate, they may not. For example, the charity that Ran Fiennes represented on his Eiger trip put a massive amount of work behind his challenge, and raised a few million pounds. We've tried to talk with the same charity, but without the well known name of Ran, we've struggled to make much headway. It may be worth talking to the local branch offices that you'll encounter along your route, or even just your local one, rather than try to hit the national head office.
There are also websites where you can encourage people to donate directly on your behalf. One of them is called justgiving (or something similar), and offers you another way of raising funds in your name.
You could get an IT literate mate to knock up a simple website for you. Those based on Wordpress can be quite good, and because they're blog based, they optimise quite well, and you can easily update it with your progress through training and the event itself. If you do get a website made up, keep the domain name quite simple, maybe based on your own name. That way, if you decide to undertake another challenge at some stage in the future, you can just open a new page.
lastgreatchallenge.com will be my first major challenge, but I have others planned including the North Pole, the Marathon des Sables (entered in March, just before I head off to Antarctica!), and if I can get there again, Mt. Everest. As well as that I'll be entering various adventure races throughout the years. To that end, I've got the web company who made my business websites involved with building a website that I can use time and time again with information about all of the expeditions, then have seperate sites for each BIG expedion as well as.
Great to hear that you've got "the bug". Don't fight it, let it, no "make it" happen, and enjoy.
Good on ya Chap

Re: South Pole - 2,200km on foot, so no fast cars!
I was advised off my mam that it would be a good idea to contact the police but i wasn't sure as she isn't exactly Christopher Columbus haha. I do want to do afew challenge's in the run up to the biggy, possibly start with the coast to coast then from the top of scotland to home back in newcastle and just progress on from there, and i do have the bug mate haha i caught it off a colleague who has done afew different charity events as he is part of the Sunderland Cycle Club so he just puts his name down and does it without needing to prep. Keep us posted on your progress and i'll sponsor you abit closer to the time, as im pretty much picking the fluff out the bottom of my pockets saving for this holiday.

Re: South Pole - 2,200km on foot, so no fast cars!
ha ha! Yea... I've got the rifle, but polar bears aren't on my usual quarry list!
Luckily, the most ferocious thing I'm likely to encounter is either my walking companion after a rough day, or the one meter tall Emperor Penguins... Polar Bears only turn up in the North (no jokes about Northerners intended!).
We'll be taking a camera and updating the website daily (weather allowing), and a satelite uplink will plot our progress on a map on the website. Training is about to start getting interesting, and things will be moving fast, so the website "blog" will start getting updated every few days with latest news about sponsors, where to see us in the press, where we're showing up in public and of course latest information about training and sponsors.
I've got a very strong idea that there may well be a pic of me reading FC sat at the South Pole marker!
On another note, I've just been booked to give a motivational talk and run some team building exercise at a restaurant project belonging to a fairly well known chap on the TV... watch the website over the next week or so for details.
Thanks for the offer of sponsorship and I really don't want to appear ungrateful, but for now guys just chuck your pennies towards Miss V who's undertaking a walk to support the troops... check her thread for details. Don't worry, I'll be back shouting about the charity stuff when it's ready to go!
Have fun!
